Abstract

The combined influence of mechanical and thermal loading during the grinding process affects the properties of the workpiece surface layers, which can significantly reduce resistance to fatigue, wear, and stress corrosion.

In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the interaction between grinding conditions and the surface integrity of the ground part. Due to lack of sufficient information on this subject, the grinding operation is sometimes avoided for critical parts.

Critical Application Example

The finding that vital parts, such as aircraft landing gear, failed prematurely as a result of incorrectly applied grinding conditions is certainly not unrelated to this concern.

Significance

Foundational research on the critical relationship between grinding parameters and component service life, particularly for safety-critical applications.
