Carbide and Nitride Materials for Cutting and Wear from SHS Powder

Abstract
Titanium nitride was synthesized by the SHS (Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) process. This exothermic process, which is easy to implement, produces very fine particles. The powder obtained is first characterized (particle size, chemical composition, structure, etc.). It is noted that heat treatment of the material in powder form has an effect on its density. The changes in titanium structure with temperature are therefore studied (bulk density, X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis, etc.). Uniaxial hot pressing is then carried out. Two materials are produced. The first is sintered from the initial powder at 1600C under a pressure of 50 MPa. The second is hot pressed under the same conditions but using powder that has previously undergone heat treatment for one hour at 1300C. The bulk materials thus obtained are then characterized from a microstructural and mechanical point of view (hardness (Hv), elastic modulus, flexural strength).
